I shoot Sony. Most specifically, I shoot Sony A7s (upgrading to the A7s II soon, as well, but that’s another article). What I find so interesting about the camera is that it’s being used on high-end commercial productions, yet it’s such a tiny, lightweight camera. That usability and form factor can be taken advantage of in so many ways, one of which is more accessible underwater photography and cinematography.
These types of underwater housings will never be cheap, as they’re complicated to make and require a great deal of testing. However, would you even consider buying a cheap underwater housing for your camera? That seems like you’d be taking a steep risk.
The Ikelite Underwater Housing for the Sony A7 series cameras displays everything that you need in an underwater housing and goes a long way to avoid switching around the general placement of the camera’s controls. This makes the housing itself easier to use right out of the box.
Again, the price may be a bit steep, but if you’re looking for a truly professional, safe option for your underwater photography and cinematography, look no further.
Ikelite Underwater Housing for the Sony a7 Range
The brand new underwater housing provides room for all of Sony’s latest mirrorless, full frame a7 II cameras. It features some fresh elements, such as the lovely white frontal design, but still sports the clear backplate—an important feature in my opinion as I sometimes find it difficult to know what I’m doing if I can’t see the camera. You’ll also be able to notice water inside of the housing immediately.
The underwater housing will not prove detrimental to your muscle-memory, with the controls lining up in the same position as they sit on the cameras themselves. Plus, Ikelite uses larger controls and push buttons which are easy to access, even with thick gloves.
A very nice feature are the laser engraved symbols, which are the same as the original ones from Sony. Since they are engraved, they’ll never peel off or fade away—neat!
